Ryoji Goto Intersecting Space Construction 1978
Here are 72 black male and 72 red female figures, connected by holding their hands and feet, to form a series. Figures extending their hands broadly to the left and the right almost appear as if they are dancing. The creator, Ryoji Goto, has claimed that he was searching for a way to unify contrasting expressive forms—such as figurative and abstract, organic figures and geometrical forms, and so on. While doing so, one day, without intention, he glanced at the grid pattern of a wire netting, and he saw connections of people overlapped on it. This was the catalyst that inspired this work. Through geometrically structured human figures, this piece expunges the sentiments and emotions of individual people, and praises youthful energy stirred up by human solidarity.
