Marta Pan Floating Sculpture 3 1969

Set upon a pond framed by a grove of trees, large and small vermillion shapes reverberate with the landscape of their surroundings. There is a hole in the center of the large, delineating gentle curve shape. The small shape has been bored out from this hole, and was born from the larger motherly shape just like a baby. The smaller one moves around as if gliding over the water when the wind blows. It draws away from and near to the larger one, almost appearing as if it was enjoying a dialogue with the carp in the pond and the nature around it. The larger one also changes its position on the spot, showing various expressions. Marta Pan was born in Hungary and later worked actively based in Paris. She was a female sculptor who is well known as a pioneer of environmental art. Her works make use of contemporary materials such as polyester resin and stainless steel to produce free, spontaneous and pleasing spaces by incorporating elements of the surroundings in which they are situated.
