Susumu Shingu Never - Ending Dialogue 1978

We see two white canvas sails mounted in orange frames, the meticulously streamlined form designed to catch the wind regardless of which direction it comes from. The two sails, which nod and turn together with the wind, perform a splendid dance, creating a dialogue between them that continues unabated. Two years older than Takamichi Ito, Susumu Shingu is another of Japan's great kinetic art sculptors. While Ito used motors to induce movement in his work, Shingu incorporates nature's own rhythm by using flows of air and water. Making his work one with the wind, the sails move as if truly alive, communicating the normally invisible rhythms of the air for anyone to see.
