Henry Moore Reclining Figure: Arch Leg 1969-70
This is a brown sculpture that is reclining majestically on the broad ground. While at first glance it appears to be an abstract sculpture, however, viewing it from the side, the well-rounded organic form looks like the figure of a reclining person. Its creator, Henry Moore who was born in Britain, is a sculptor, representative of the 20th century. To Moore, who thought that “the foundation of sculpture is the human body,” statues portraying 「Reclining Figures」 are one of the important motifs that he pursued throughout his lifetime. The torso holding its back up straight and long legs which describe an arc give rise to new and variegated shapes, depending on the position of the viewer. He once said, “As for me, nature acts as an ideal backdrop and serves to complete a sculpture.” Reclining majestically while bathing in sunlight amidst the vastness of nature, this piece highlights the mysteries of human life lived in the modern era.
