Churyo Sato Young Woman 1971

This is a young woman with her right hand lightly on her hip, deeply inclining her head as she turns her body ever so slightly. From the half naked body wearing jeans we can feel the healthy beauty of a young Japanese woman. In the 1950s, Churyo Sato created many Statues of people and nude women, which were modeled on ordinary people, including their merits and defects, conveying the true nature of the Japanese people, opening up enormous possibilities for the history of modern sculpture in Japan. Figures of sophisticated nude women of urban life, partially clad in contemporary clothing such as jeans and hats, appeared from the 1970s. The beauty of Japanese women, which had changed in the more than 20 years since the end of the Second World War, is expressed here in a refreshing figure through the incorporation of contemporary mores such as jeans.
